Career Management
Recruitment to a Specialty Post: Career Management
KSS Deanery has a Careers Team which offers career support, planning, resources, events and projects. This support is complemented by careers specialists in LEPs. For example each LAB has a careers lead. The STC also has a responsibility to maintain, in its membership, an individual who can provide careers advice and guidance to core and higher trainees.
The trainee support model works as a three tier process:
1st tier:
Within the South Thames Foundation School educational supervisors in each of the LEPs are the first point of contact for foundation trainees considering which specialty to follow.
2nd tier:
foundation trainees may be referred to foundation programme leads/LEP careers leads and DMEs at LEP level who have received additional training in careers support.
3rd tier:
Trainees who are experiencing difficulty in planning their careers may be referred to the careers team. The referral process is via educational supervisor/medical education manager/training programme director. The resulting careers interview is completely impartial and confidential.
The team advocate a four stage careers process for postgraduate doctors as above. Each stage is broken down into more detailed processes and activities and this can be explored on the careers website and at careers workshops, which are scheduled regularly for F2s as they consider which specialty to apply for. The team also runs information evenings and supports career fairs. The careers team manage the UK medical careers website on behalf of the Department of Health.
The careers team have produced a careers booklet ROADS to Success. This handbook is designed to support both trainees and their supervisors throughout the career planning process. It can be ordered here.
KSS Deanery runs, through its partnership with the University of Brighton , a postgraduate programmeManaging Medical Careers which is designed to offer participants an opportunity to become more proficient in the provision of career support to medical students and junior doctors.
