Welcome to the second newsletter from KSS deanery for SAS doctors. This includes information and links which the SAS doctors might find useful. You may have to copy and paste the links to access the sites mentioned in the newsletter. Please feel free to contact me by e mail if you wish to submit any information, article or achievements to this newsletter.

LinkedIn site for SAS doctors and Leads

I have created a linked in group for SAS doctors and their leads and tutors. Please feel free to contact him on dashora@hotmail.com if you want to become a member and enjoy the benefits of networking with other SAS doctors in the region. This is a professional social networking site. As the SAS funding stops next year, I would continue to manage this online resource to continue to support the SAS initiatives developed by KSS deanery. Hopefully this can be done with minimum administrative cost but would depend on active involvement and contributions from SAS doctors.

More SAS courses at RCP London

Further courses have been organised by KSS deanery at RCP London for SAS doctors. Please book early to avoid disappointment.

There is a general link for all the events below. I have also included individual links to each workshop below which will take the doctor to the information and booking page of each individual event.

Please let me know if you would like any further information.

SAS doctors as Educational Supervisors

BMA supports the role of SAS doctors as educational and clinical supervisors:

Please read the following excerpt from the BMA website

The case for SAS doctors in Educational and Clinical Supervisor roles

At the recent SASC Annual Conference, there was concern expressed that appointments to Educational Supervisor roles are often restricted to consultants. There was great enthusiasm for the appointment of SAS colleagues as educational and clinical supervisors which many employers are already doing. There are already good examples of this practice in several trusts and these examples of good practice should be shared regionally. The appointment of SAS doctors in Educational and Clinical Supervisor roles will increase the applicant pool to many experienced and capable SAS doctors. Conference has endorsed this recommendation by passing a motion calling for such appointments.

Supporting SAS doctors as Educational/Clinical Supervisors

The establishment of SAS doctors as Educational and Clinical Supervisors will require support from Deaneries, Directors of Medical Education (DME) and Programme Directors for F1/F2. Prospective supervisors will be required to undergo some training. This will require study leave, and some funding (the SAS Development Fund would be ideal for this).

Benefits to SAS doctors of being an Educational/Clinical Supervisor

There is a wealth of SAS talent out there in hospitals and in the community with much to offer. The role of Educational/Clinical Supervisor provides a number of opportunities and benefits to SAS doctors including:

  • Professional development, and career development
  • adds another dimension to professional life
  • enhances job satisfaction
  • helps to build your portfolio
  • opportunity to support younger doctors in a formal manner.

SAS doctors as educational supervisors in KSS deanery

If you are interested in becoming an educational supervisor please contact Simon Qui at the KSS deanery for further advice. Some guidance is attached here - Guidance on Education Supervision by SAS Doctors

All SAS Leads and Tutors encouraged to have their educational appraisal

I would encourage all SAS leads to have their educational appraisal so that they can develop their educational roles further. A template for educational appraisal is attached. They can have their educational appraisal with the trust’s DME. I would also be happy to do it if that is more convenient.

Achievement of our members

Submitted by Dr Johann Willers

WEARSAS (Worthing Education and Anaesthetic Staff and Associate Specialist) group achievements at The Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain & Ireland (AAGBI) meeting held in Edinburgh are shown below. Following is the tally of presentation and first prizes won by members of the group.

English Teaching Hospitals4  0
Rest of English DGHs3     0

In addition the first prize in the Case Presentation section was won by describing a novel technique of treating rib fracture pain developed by WEARSAS in our regional anaesthesia and comparative anatomy workshops. Thus WEARSAS won all the first prizes on offer in all the sections we competed in. (We did not contest the single remaining section.)

SAS doctors’ career

You might be interested in this article about SAS doctors’ career -

SAS (staff and associate specialist) doctors are mainly staff grade doctors and associate specialist doctors; there are smaller numbers of senior clinical medical officers, clinical medical officers, hospital practitioners, and clinical assistants (those not also working in general practice). Their roles are typically seen as providing a high service component. Historically, individual development has not been viewed as a priority, although job plans increasingly incorporate time for supporting professional activity. As a result of Modernising Medical Careers, there will soon be a dramatic change in the type of doctor entering this role, [1] which will include doctors at a considerably more junior level. Although there are some positive changes recognising the need for professional development for SAS doctors, the lack of a structure for the educational process is hampering appropriate training and individual development. The stage is set for the creation of a new “lost tribe.”
