Pilot Background and Aims:
As part of the testing and piloting work carried out by the NHS Revalidation Support Team (RST) across England in 2011/12, KSS Deanery has been commissioned by the RST to lead the Doctors in Training Revalidation Pilot across all the English Deaneries.
This pilot will develop proposals for the enhancement of the current Annual Review of Competence Progression (ARCP) process to support revalidation and assure the responsible officers in the Deaneries that they have sufficient information to inform a recommendation to the GMC. This pilot will attempt to build on existing documentation and keep the process simple and straightforward.
The process will be tested by involving the doctors undertaking ARCP/RITA in the months of October, November and December 2011 within the English Deaneries.
Pilot Process:
Participation is voluntary for the trainee doctor and the Deaneries have agreed that participating in the pilot will not affect the ARCP outcome of trainees this year.
The pilot process is simple and straightforward and involves four steps:
Step 1: A trainee doctor willing to participate will complete the following:
Pilot Consent Form (Click on the link) to indicate their willingness to participate in the Pilot
Form R Pilot Supplement (Click on the link) which is a self- declaration regarding scope of practice, SUI, complaints and health.
Step 2: The trainee doctor will collect an Exit Report (See Attached Document) from their current employer which states whether the trainee doctor has been named in any complaints or investigations.
Step 3:The trainee will then send these three pieces of information to the Deanery, either scanned with the appropriate signature and sent via email or by post before the ARCP panel takes place. The panel would look at the Form R Pilot Supplement and the Exit Report and complete a feedback form stating the usefulness of the documents and information presented.

This feedback will then be analysed and taken into account to produce the final pilot report which will be produced in February 2012.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why should a trainee doctor participate?
Participating in this national pilot gives you an opportunity to get your views heard and shape the future of the revalidation process for doctors in training. It is a genuine opportunity to participate and influence the future decision about revalidation for trainees. Only the trainee doctors who have an ARCP/RITA in the months of October, November and December 2011 are invited to participate.
Is participation in the pilot compulsory for the trainee doctors?
No, it is a voluntary process. The trainee doctors sign the consent form as an indication of their willingness to participate.
If the trainees participate, will it affect their ARCP outcome?
No, it will definitely not affect the trainee’s ARCP outcome. The information gathered is purely for pilot purposes.
Why should I sign a consent form?
The consent form gives you information regarding data protection which you need to sign if you want to participate.
Can I change my mind after agreeing to participate?
Yes, you can change your mind after agreeing to participate or signing the consent form. The consent form is not binding in any way.
What should the employers do if they do not have sufficient time to collect the information for the exit report?
The employers should declare that they have not been able to collect all the information about the trainee due to time constraints, but the report should be given to the trainee with sufficient time for the trainee to send it to the Deanery before the ARCP date.
What should a trainee doctor do if they are unable to get the exit report from the employer?
They should contact their Deanery Revalidation Lead to report any issues/ difficulties they may have in gathering this information from your employer/s. For the purposes of the pilot there is no detriment to the trainee if the employer fails to give an Exit Report.
What should I do if I don’t have an e-portfolio?
If you don’t have an e-portfolio, please give a photocopy of your exit report to your Educational Supervisor. In any case, you should send the original exit report to your Deanery.
What should the ARCP panel chair/members do if the trainees do not have sufficient information such as the exit report or have not completed the pilot supplement Form R?
The ARCP Panel should state the reasons the trainee gives for not completing the form R supplement or not being able to get the exit report from the employer.
Why should I fill in the feedback form?
The feedback form captures your experience in the pilot and suggestions regarding the future of the revalidation for doctors in training.
Is my feedback confidential?
Your feedback is completely confidential and will not be shared with anyone apart from the central project team and independent evaluators. Anonymised data will be used to inform the recommendations regarding revalidation of doctors in training.
Will I be able to participate if I am in less than full time training?
Yes, you will be able to participate if you have an ARCP panel coming up within your Deanery between the months of October and December 2011. Please contact your Deanery for further information
