You should help to:

  • Vet and prioritise requests for in-patient investigations
  • Protocol CT requests
  • Carry out urgent ultrasound on inpatients in the department and on ITU
  • Carry out urgent screening examinations on in-patients
  • Provide support and advice to Radiographic and Nursing Staff including assistance with IV cannulation and advice as to patient suitability for iodinated and gadolinium based contrast.

Training and Rotations:

Training is very largely consultant led (closely supervised ultrasound, screening and CT lists) with support from Advanced Radiography Practitioners in the fields of screening, ultrasound and plain film reporting, especially at the beginning of training.

Senior trainees are actively involved in teaching junior doctors and medical students.

Clinical Radiology training consists of a structured programme over a five year period (fulltime equivalent) in order to achieve a core level of competence in all aspects of clinical radiology that will enable the trainee to practice as a Specialist.

Years 1 – 3 are spent in Core training designed to cover core interpretative and procedural skills, comprising a series of modular system based firms designed to cover the Royal College of Radiologists core curriculum.

In the first year the emphasis will be on Emergency radiology in preparation for on call. An in-house examination is run towards the end of the first year of training in preparation for on-call commitments. Weekly timetables are provided prior to commencing each firm.

During years 4 and 5 advanced training is undertaken to consolidate core training and to undertake more focused training in one or more declared subspecialty interests.

Leave Arrangements:

The Training Programme Director or College Tutor must approve all annual and study leave. All requests for leave should be submitted with at least 6 weeks’ notice.

Teaching Programme:

Trainees are expected to attend the KSS courses and study days for the FRCR examinations.

Regular departmental academic sessions will be held during which trainees are involved in case presentations and discussion, and Journal club.

There are regular consultant-led film viewing tutorials in preparation for the final FRCR. These are held throughout the working week. StRs will be encouraged to attend and where possible to contribute to MDTMs for the firms they are undertaking.
