Changes to MRCPsych Examination eligibility criteria
The GMC has agreed to the College request to change the eligibility criteria to sit MRCPsych Papers 1, 2 and 3. In summary, the mandatory requirements for entry to sit MRCPsych Papers 1, 2 and 3 are:
Employment in a post foundation/internship post in Psychiatry in:
i. An approved Training programme.
OR
ii. Posts Recognised by the Hospital (Trusts where applicable) as incorporating within contractual arrangements specified time and funding for educational training. Job plans must include dedicated time for academic and educational activities such as attending journal clubs, grand rounds, attendance at an MRCPsych course or equivalent, study leave and regular weekly educational supervision.
In summary, doctors no longer need to have six months post-foundation training/experience to sit any written paper.
The GMC also agreed to a reduction in the eligibility criteria to sit the CASC from 30 months whole time equivalent post foundation/internship experience in Psychiatry to 24 months by the time of sitting the CASC. An additional 6 months in another recognised medical specialty will no longer count towards eligibility to sit the MRCPsych CASC.

Changes to eligibility for entry/progression into CT3 training
At a heads of schools meeting in March it was agreed that trainees had to pass two out of the three written papers by the time of applying/progressing to CT3. This was ratified at the heads of schools meeting in June.
The above change comes into effect from 2012 and the change in eligibility criteria for the Examinations takes effect immediately.
The Examinations calendar for 2012 has also been published and is available on the College website via the following link:
