The KSS School of Paediatrics is responsible for the recruitment and training of all the paediatric posts within KSS at the level 1 (core paediatrics ST1 – ST3) and level 2 (ST4 –ST5), see update below:

KSS Deanery has recently negotiated that the management of KSS ST6 trainees from September 2012 will now be managed by the KSS Deanery under the umbrella of the KSS School of Paediatrics which is led by Head of School Dr Peter Martin.

KSS Deanery will manage the administration of these programmes and will be responsible for the ST6 trainees from September 2012. This will include ARCP management, rotations and supporting trainees with general training issues.

Under current arrangements London Deanery will continue to manage KSS trainees at HST for years 7 & 8.

The paediatric training is a ‘run through’ process.  There is no uncoupling.  This means that a doctor appointed at ST1 will, subject to satisfactory assessment of competencies, move smoothly through to ST8 and hence CCT and completion of the programme.  Those trainees appointed within KSS at ST1 will be managed by KSS for ST1 – ST5 (ST6 from Sep 2012) and ST7 to ST8 your training will be managed by London Deanery on behalf of KSS.

Some training opportunities within London teaching and district general hospitals will continue to be accessible to KSS trainees for at least 1 year during Level 3 training.. Allocation to these posts will continue through a transparent, agreed and fair process, applied in common to both London and KSS trainees and will be based on educational and training needs of all trainees in the programmes.

Because of this there is a close working relationship between the KSS School of Paediatrics and the London School of Paediatrics, headed by Dr Andrew Long (Interim Acting Head of School from Oct).

At present there are approximately 95 trainees at ST1 – ST5 in KSS Hospitals.  Recruitment to these posts is run in conjunction with the RCPCH and KSS Deanery using a national application form.

It is expected that trainees will be assessed within their place of work as to the attainment of the Core and Higher Competencies as described by the RCPCH, before being signed off by the school as having successfully completed the ARCP (Annual Review of Competency Progression).
