This study addresses an important topic; whether a compensating extraction of the upper FPM is necessary when extracting the lower FPM, during the mixed dentition.  This area currently lacks a sound evidence base for decision making.   The findings of this study will provide an evidence base for dentists’ decision making as well as having the potential to impact on individual children and the providers of funding of dental care in the UK through changes to clinical practice and clinical guidelines.
