What do we provide

The Kent, Surrey and Sussex areas

KSS provides a rich variety of training environments for doctors who wish to pursue a career in general practice.

The Kent, Surrey and Sussex area covers a large part of the urban and rural areas of South East England. It has excellant transport links to London, Europe with the Eurostar and high speed rail link and the many cross channel ferries. It has a rich mix of towns, three ancient cathedral cities and a long and very varied coastline.

About our population

The Deanery covers a population of around 4.2 million people and has 12 major Acute Hospital Trusts, 8 Primary Care Trusts, 4 Mental Health & Specialist Trusts and 4000 GPs. East Kent and Brighton and Sussex are University NHS Trusts and Frimley Park and Medway are Foundation NHS Trusts.

School, locations and Trusts

There is one School of General Practice which supports 280 individual GP Specialty training programmes in 13 GP Training Programme locations, based around the main Acute Trusts. At present, GP Specialty Training programmes in KSS are of three years duration and will be providing 18 to 20 months in GP placements from August.

Curricula

All GP training programmes are organised to deliver the outcomes of the GP Curriculum and in KSS we aim to provide GP trainees with as wide an exposure to the learning environments appropriate to this, as is possible.

Training Support

The GP Specialty Training Programmes are supported by a local team of enthusiastic GP Programme Directors (these will nearly all be GPs who have been trained and selected for the purpose, some come from an academic background in medical education).

There are normally three per training programme, but more where the programme is larger, who support the GP trainees in every year of the training programme and co-ordinate the group of GP Trainers who will look after you when you are in your GP placements.

Our team of GP Programme Directors provide local learning sessions throughout the training programme and the Deanery provides induction and familiarisation meetings for all our GP trainees.

There are nearly 360 approved GP Trainers in nearly 300 GP Training Practices all over KSS, which includes urban, rural and mixed locations. Each has its own style and environment but all are approved and quality managed to provide an appropriate placement for GP trainees. All our GP Trainers are supported by our GP Deanery team in order to support you as effectively as possible.

In addition you will have training when the time is appropriate in communication skills for out of hours work in GP. Each of you will have a nominated GP Educational Supervisor who wil provide individual support for you.

For many of you they will support you throughout the whole of your GP training programme.
