The GP Educator Pathway

There are a variety of ways you can be involved in education in Primary Care. You can host doctors working in the Foundation Programme as well as becoming a GP trainer.

To take either of these roles you need to enrol on our GP Educator Pathway.

From September 2009 any doctor wishing to become a GP trainer, who has not already enrolled and attended at least one of the GP Educator Pathway Modules will  need to undertake a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education and Strategic Leadership which KSS has developed with the University of Kent.

Below is a brief outline of the GP Educator Pathway:

Becoming a Foundation Year 2 Clinical Supervisor (FY2CS):

  • As a FY2CS you host doctors in their second year of Foundation training (the first year after GMC registration) for a 4 month period.

In order to apply to become  a FY2CS you need to undertake a 3 day teaching module (Module 1) and your practice needs to be assessed as suitable by a member of the KSS Deanery team (if it is not a training practice).

Becoming a Foundation Community Educational Supervisor:

  • Foundation Community Educational Supervisors  undertake tutorial teaching for small groups of FY2 doctors and support other FY2 Foundation Clinical Supervisors.

Training for this role takes place on a 3 day module (Module 2) providing you have successfully completed Module1. You must also have MRCGP.

To become a GP trainer you will need to have MRCGP and have completed module 1 and 2.

  • You will also have had to have real experience of teaching as a FY2CES and ideally also hosted an FY2 doctor in your practice.
  • Your practice will also need to be accredited as a training practice by a member of the KSS GP Deanery team and you will need to have shown how you have begun to develop your skills and competencies as a GP educator through the development of a portfolio.

  • Please note that there are additional Deanery Criteria for Trainers and their practices
