Research and development

We are particularly concerned to encourage qualitative research approaches to medical education, since they are highly appropriate to educational settings and are less well-presented in the literature at present.

In particular, the Education Department is interested in, and has strengths in:

  • Practitioner research
  • In-depth, small scale, humanistic inquiries
  • Theory into practice/practice into theory' approaches

We believe that it is important that research should begin with the everyday lives of individuals; that those individuals should be engaged a far as possible in the research process; and that theory should be developed from real, lived experience. The department subscribes to the ethical code of the British Educational Research Association (BERA).
