What is Postgraduate Medical Education?

After leaving school, students proceed into hospitals across the region to begin their postgraduate medical education. They continue through the various career grades, deciding en route whether they wish to make their career in hospital medicine, general practice, or in some other branch of medicine. In Medical education, the postgraduate education of doctors is provided by the consultant and general practitioners alongside whom they work daily.

Our Remit

In theory, 50% of postgraduate doctors time is spent providing a service and the other 50% pursuing their educational agenda (a combination of passing examinations for Membership of the appropriate Royal College and of becoming clinically competent in increasingly complex procedures and cases). In practice, of course, education and service are inextricably intertwined in the workplace environment. In effect, learning takes place through the 'professional conversation' between consultants and postgraduate doctors ie. an ongoing discussion of patients, processes and principles, which enables postgraduate doctors to develop professional judgement.
