Course Outline

Intended participants

Core surgical trainees from across the KSS region.

Aim

To support you in developing your understanding and practice of teaching and learning

Intended Outcomes

At the end of the 7 hour session, participants will have further developed their abilities to:

  • Underpin clinical teaching and learning with educational principles
  • Structure practical skills teaching and learning
  • Use small group discussion techniques (e.g. action learning circles)
  • Prepare an effective teaching session with reference to learners’ specific needs
  • Appreciate the value of reflective dialogue
  • Understand the educational role of assessment and best practice in carrying out workplace based assessments
  • Maximize their own learning and assessment opportunities
  • Recognise learning opportunities with clinical and educational supervisors

Pre course activities

Participants to select a local QESP graduate within their specialty, and to negotiate, carry out and compile notes on:

  • an observation of teaching (e.g. in theatre, out-patients, a ward round, or other settings).

Post course task

Participants to carry out a planned teaching session (if possible, the session planned during this workshop), and to design, gather and write brief reflective notes on written evaluations from the learners involved.
