Curricula

Core Surgical Training has a comprehensive curriculum covering competencies required to be achieved during the CST programme. The curriculum is integral to the e-portfolio and all the assessment requirements are mapped against it. It is essential that CST trainees and trainers understand this curriculum as their whole programme is based on it.

Change to the Curriculum

There have been updates to various surgical curricula, including Core, which the JCST advise be implemented immediately by all Schools. Unlike large scale curriculum change where trainees can opt to move over or not, the JCST do not believe the changes to be so onerous as to cause trainees difficulties and therefore advise immediate implementation.

The KSS School of Surgery would therefore prefer to implement the move to the 2010 curriculum as soon as possible, unless an individual trainee feels the change would be inimical to his or her training.

ALL CT1 trainees have been recruited onto the 2010 curriculum and we would expect that all CT1 trainees would have a good knowledge of the topics required of them. It will be your responsibility to ensure the educational supervisor is aware of which curriculum you are on as well as aware of the topics you are required to complete.

We would advise the CT2 trainees to move to the 2010 curriculum.

It is the responsibility of the trainee to drive your own training and ensure your portfolio reflects the correct topics suitable for the curriculum you are on. When you then upload a workplace based assessment, please select one of the topics from your learning agreement to match it to.

If you choose an additional topic at this stage, that topic will be added automatically to your Learning agreement and you may face difficulties at the ARCP as a result.
