About Us
Message from the Head of School
I am delighted to welcome you to the KSS School of Surgery which was established in April 2007. The school is dedicated to providing the highest quality of surgical training and clinical experience across a wide range of acute Trusts. We are currently responsible for 112 trainees in Core Surgical training. We are rolling out the new surgical curriculum and the School has developed an exciting programme, which aims to provide comprehensive exposure to and grounding in general surgery, trauma and orthopaedics, ENT surgery and urology. Within some rotations, there is opportunity to experience intensive care, neurosurgery and plastic surgery. We are currently mapping out the curriculum to the programmes within KSS.
It is very much the philosophy of the School to prepare core Trainees for specialist higher training. With this in mind, the School will be one of the few to offer competitive entry to an additional year of core training in August 2011.
In addition to Trust-based teaching sessions, there are two School-wide teaching sessions, an annual audit and research prize day and monthly networked teaching programmes based on the ISCP curriculum. Trainees are supervised by an Educational Supervisor and Trust surgical tutor, who meet regularly with the Head of School, fellow tutors and trainee representatives to be updated on the latest developments in training to be a surgeon and to ensure that high quality training occurs in every Trust.
KSS is planning its own higher surgical programmes in General Surgery, T&O, Urology, ENT and OMFS. We hope soon to be able to deliver the Core and Higher surgical curriculae in these specialties.
We have a very active Education department in the Deanery, supporting consultants and trainees across our schools in the use of innovative teaching and assessment methods. My own background is that I am a general surgeon with a special interest in colorectal surgery. I have an MA in Clinical Education and have a major commitment for medical education. I have been a consultant at St Peter’s Hospital, Chertsey since 1996, having qualified from Charing Cross Hospital Medical School.
We very much welcome feedback to ensure we continuously improve the experience we are able to offer to current and future trainees.
Finally, there are a number of important links throughout this website which are able to help you understand the new curriculum, regulations associated with surgical training and the structure and function of KSS deanery.
